From A.K.A to Cassper Nyovest, including Nasty C, Emtee or Kwesta ; South-African rap established itself as a reference in Africa, mainly thanks to its male representatives. But now, let’s focus on a woman, Sho Madjozi, who is as good as her colleagues mentionned above !

First and foremost : an intellectual !

Sho Madjozi, whose real name is Maya Wegerif, is a South-African rapper born in 1992, near Shirley, a small village in Limpopo province, in the North of the country. She spent a part of her life in the Unites States where she studied at Mount Holyoke College, a very selective liberal art college for women, in Massachusetts. She then came back home to finish her studies at Johanessburg University.

Her studies helped her develop her love for words. Indeed, she tried spoken word under the pseudo MayaThePoet, referring to her real name. As a reminder, spoken word is a form of art referring to oral poetry. This art is also mastered by the Madascarian Caylah we introduced you almost two years ago.

From MayaThePoet to Sho Madjozi

It’s been since her second trip back from the United-States that she decided to do rap and change her stage name to Sho Madjozi. She made a first appearance next to the rapper Okmalumkoolkat for the piece “ Ngiyashisa Bhe ”.

A few months later, in December 2017, she stood out with the hit “ Dumi Hi Phone ” in collaboration with PS DJz.

Beyond her rap, Sho Madjozi stands out with her style and the importance given to aesthetic in her videos. Her colorful and outstanding outfits match with the dynamism in her music. Plus, she raps in Xitsonga, a language spoken by more than 3 millions people in Africa, as to show the importance she gives to remain faithful to her roots.
